Three British Columbians active in community arts were recognized at the Assembly of BC Arts Councils’ 30th Anniversary Conference May 2, 2009, in Kelowna.

The Assembly of BC Arts Councils chose the three Community Arts Champions during Arts and Culture Week, April 19-25, and the awards were presented by Elizabeth MacRitchie of the BC Arts Council, together with Joan Richoz, president of the Assembly.

The 2009 Community Arts Champions are:

  • Gina Sufrin, former Executive Director of the Assembly, and tireless advocate for the arts.  The Assembly recognized the many hours Gina has spent of her own time working for the benefit of the arts and arts organizations in BC.

  • Jon Bartlett & Rika Ruebsaat, a musical duo from Princeton, BC, were honoured for their work in promoting the music and heritage of BC communities.  Jon and Rika have sung and taught BC's folk music, including a 16-part series for CBC.

  • A posthumous award was given to Calvin Kruk, a former mayor of Dawson Creek, who promoted arts and culture in his region and throughout BC before his untimely death in 2008.

The Assembly of BC Arts Councils congratulates these individuals for the excellence of their contributions to the arts in their communities.

Arts & Culture Week, and the Arts Champion Awards, are supported by the Province of British Columbia through the British Columbia Arts Council.
